Over 150,000 bicycles are stolen every year – that's nearly 1 in 20 ! Obviously there are things you can do to help prevent theft:

Buy a decent lock. As a very general rule we'd suggest that you spend between 5 and 10% of the value of your bicycle on a quality lock (preferably more if you can afford it). Have a look at our lock list for the locks that we believe will reduce the need for you to claim on your insurance.

Lock your bicycle to an immovable object. Note that we use the phrase immovable not 'very heavy' – an elephant is very heavy but not an ideal place to lock your bicycle too! Ok, so we are taking extremes here but we have had people lock their bike to something which turned out to be inappropriate!

Use multiple locks. If you really want to protect your bicycle, try using two locks of different types – a chain lock and a D lock for instance. The likelihood of a thief having tools for both types of lock are much less.

Secure your accessories. Don't forget to secure accessories and removable wheels with your lock (or use a separate lock for those).
