The rise and rise of cycling
The ownership and use of cycles have risen dramatically in the UK over the last few years. As we become more aware of the environmental impacts that cars have on the environment, the benefits of regular exercise and the costs of operating a car, more people are now using cycles to combat those very problems.
Using a cycle clearly creates less pollution, greenhouse gases and depletes the finite resources far less than a car. Cycling is an excellent way to exercise and causes less damage to the body than jogging for instance, whilst the maintenance costs associated with a cycle is a fraction of that of owning a car.
However many people do overlook the need for specialist cycle insurance. Cycles are relatively easy to steal and resell, they don’t have the security devices that cars benefit from and many cycle users don’t have liability cover to protect them from third party claims. There are now over 23 million cycles in the UK and only a fraction will be covered by specialist cycle insurance.
Around 60% of the cycles in the UK are used for commuting or professional work. Obviously the more you use your cycle, the more likely you are to suffer from theft, accidental damage or be involved in (or cause) a road accident.
