How to Maintain Your E-Bike

Autumn brings great cycling opportunities, with scenic trails under the changing leaves and golden sunrises on misty mornings. But rain, mud, fallen leaves and cooler temperatures can take their toll on your e-bike. A little regular maintenance can help keep your bike running smoothly and safely.

Clean your bike after wet or muddy rides

Muddy trails can bring your ride to a halt. Mud and road grime can build up around the drivetrain, brakes and moving parts, increasing wear over time.

  • Use a soft brush, damp cloth and bike-friendly cleaner to remove any dirt after each ride
  • Avoid pressure washers, these can force water into bearings and electrical components creating damage
  • Don’t direct water at the motor, battery connections or charging port
  • Dry the bike afterwards, paying particular attention to the chain and exposed metal parts

Following your manufacturer’s cleaning instructions, especially when cleaning electrical components, can help your bike is being maintained properly.

Keep the chain clean and lubricated

Autumn weather can be particularly challenging for maintaining your bike’s chain. Rain can wash lubricant away, while grit can turn a dirty chain into an abrasive surface that wears down your drivetrain.

You can protect your chain from damage by cleaning the chain with a suitable drivetrain cleaner, letting it dry, then applying cycle lubricant. A wet-weather lubricant can be useful for persistently rainy conditions, although it attracts dirt and requires subsequent regular cleaning.

It’s important to wipe off excess lubricants after application, and avoiding any lubricant getting on brake discs and pads.

Check tyre pressure and condition

Thorns and grit from rough terrain can easily get embedded in tyres. Checking your tyres regularly for worn tread, cracks, cuts and embedded objects can ensure your rides are smooth.

Use the tyre and bike manufacturer’s recommended pressure range, taking your weight and any luggage into account. Don’t simply inflate to the maximum pressure shown on the tyre.

If you frequently ride on muddy paths, tyres designed for those conditions may offer better grip. Even with suitable tyres, wet leaves and slippery surfaces require extra caution.

Give your brakes extra attention

Wet weather can affect braking performance, and grit can accelerate wear on pads and braking surfaces. Following a simple checklist can keep them in working order:

  • Check brake pads for wear according to the manufacturer’s guidance
  • Watch for reduced stopping power, rubbing or changes in how the brake levers feel during your rides
  • Keep discs or rim braking surfaces clean using an appropriate product
  • Have persistent squeaking, weak braking or other faults checked by a qualified technician

Care for your battery in cooler weather

Lower temperatures can temporarily reduce battery range, so allow extra charge for longer journeys.

Store and charge the battery within the manufacturer’s specified temperature limits. If it has become cold during a ride, let it warm naturally to an approved charging temperature before plugging it in. Don’t use a radiator or other direct heat source.

Before charging, make sure the battery, charging port and connections are dry, and use only the manufacturer-approved charger. Don’t charge a battery that is damaged, swollen, leaking or unusually hot.

For longer periods without use, follow the manufacturer’s recommended storage charge level rather than leaving it completely flat or fully charged indefinitely.

Continuously caring for your e-bike after each ride can keep you riding all autumn long. Checking your manufacture’s guide can help ensure you care cleaning and maintaining your bike appropriately.
